Description: 1979 Fast Passage 39
Description: A beautiful, stable blue water cutter rigged cruiser that has spent its life in the Great Lakes fresh water, many upgrades, always stored inside, wonderful teak interior, artic furnace, current survey. Passage is a Fast Passage 39 Sloop/Cutter class by William Garden and built by the Philbrooks Shipyard Ltd. of Sidney B.C., Canada. An almost identical Philbrooks Fast Passage 39 Moonshine was sailed to distinction by Francis Stokes in the inaugural 1982-83 BOC Challenge singlehanded around the world race. Stokes captured second place in Class 2, one of ten finishers in a fleet that numbered 16 at the start. The 39 enjoyed a ten year production run totaling some 40 boats in the 1970's and 1980's. Most were built at Philbrooks Shipyards. A handful, including Moonshine came out of Tollycraft in Kelso, Washington. Some of the Fast Passage 39'5 were produced as kit boats with an unfinished interior and lacking other internal systems. Passage'. is not a kit boat and was fully constructed with a custom interior. As Moonshines performance indicates, the Fast Passage 39 is a true oceangoing sailboat. Her hull form is hard to argue with: moderate beam, attractive sheer, canoe stem, moderate fin keel, and rudder placed well aft for maximum control. In addition with a long waterline and a fairly large water-plane, the boat can be heavily loaded without seriously compromising performance. The boats 36% ballas/displacement ratio is what is expected in a properly designed bluewater cruiser. Unlike many vessels of her vintage Passage has improved with age. She was purchased new by the present owners brother and has remained in the family since. After a brief sea-trial she was transported overland to the Great Lakes where she has remained in service. Surveying the vessel it was very apparent that she has been a fresh water boat all her life, and stored inside (rigging included) during the winter. The maintenance records of this vessel are as impressive as her lineage. New tankage, gelcoat, AC, DC, rebuilt engine and transmission (1998) are just a partial listing. I personally feel that this vessel is generally in better condition than most late model vessels. She certainly is one of the most capable well made bluewater vessels on the Great Lakes.
